Escherichia coli

E. coli remains the workhorse in our lab for molecular biology, directed evolution and enzyme production.

Synthetic Biology

Our "Engineering of biology" focuses mainly on three organisms:

  • Escherichia coli

  • Cupriavidus necator H16 (also known as Ralstonia eutropha H16)

  • Oleaginous yeasts

These organisms are utilized as biomanufacturing platform to transform industrial or agricultural waste into high value chemicals, e.g., bioplastics, fatty acid and derivatives etc. We are collaborating with researchers from Thailand, Malaysia and India to harness resources from the following waste streams:

  • Carbon dioxide;

  • Industrial by-products (e.g., glycerol);

  • Lignocellulosic materials;

  • Palm oil mill effluent (POME);

  • Sugarcane waste;
